Oklahoma’s 39th-ranked women’s tennis team fell to defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Stanford, 6-1, Saturday in the final round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend tournament at Stanford.
The Sooners (2-1) finished second in the Stanford Region after splitting their pair of matches. OU upset No. 29 UNLV on Friday, 4-1.
OU coach David Mullins said his team’s energy and execution was phenomenal in the doubles portion of the match against UNLV and that it gave the team confidence heading into singles play.
The Sooners claimed the early 1-0 lead, sweeping the Lady Rebels in doubles competition. OU’s 31st-ranked duo of senior Ana-Maria Constantinescu and freshman Alice Radu topped UNLV’s Aleksandra Josifoska and Nives Pavlovic in No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
Senior Maria Kalashnikova and freshman Whitney Ritchie downed UNLV’s Lucia Batta and Anna Maskaljun, 8-2, from the No. 2 position. To finish up the doubles sweep, junior Marie-Pier Huet and senior Tara Eckel teamed up to defeat UNLV’s Jana Albers and Adrienn Hidvegi.
Oklahoma earned three singles points at the No. 3, 5 and 6 positions to win the match. Ritchie beat UNLV’s Pavlovic in straight sets at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-1. In the No. 5 position, Kalashnikova knocked off UNLV’s Hidvegi in the tiebreaker set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.
Freshman Mia Lancaster finished off the upset by besting UNLV’s Maskaljun at the No. 6 spot, 7-6, 7-5.
“In singles, we just fought harder and wanted it more than UNLV,” Mullins said.
OU got off to another 1-0 start against No. 1 Stanford. The Sooners rebounded from a loss in No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point after OU won in the No. 1 and 3 doubles positions.
Constantinescu and Radu defeated Stanford’s tandem of Hillary Barte and Stacey Tan at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-1.
Oklahoma earned the day’s doubles point after Huet and Eckel beat Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford, 8-5, at the No. 3 spot.
“We showed this weekend that we can compete with the best doubles teams in the country,” Mullins said.
As the match moved into the singles portion, the Cardinal made sure another Sooner upset was not in the works. Stanford, who has four players ranked in the top 80 individually, won all six singles points.
“In singles, Stanford showed us why they are the defending champs,” Mullins said. “I was proud of how we fought and forced Stanford to execute at a high level.”
OU returns home for its next match against No. 23 Arkansas at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The Sooners will be hosting Campus Kids Day when they face the Razorbacks. Fans in attendance can win various prizes.
