The Big 12 is loaded with talent this season, but February shows no love on the schedule for OU women‘s basketball. Even Valentine’s Day is out to get coach Sherri Coale and her team this year with OU set to go against the formidable Connecticut Huskies on the road.
The 90 win-streak came to an end last month, but don’t count on the Huskies bowing out quietly. At this point, being ranked second in both the AP and ESPN/USA Coaches’ Poll affords senior forward Maya Moore and the Huskies the same bull’s-eye the No. 1 team in the country wears every time they step on the court.
The current No.1 team in the country is one familiar to OU — the Baylor Bears, out of Waco, Texas. This Big 12 team is led by 6-foot-8-inch sophomore Brittney Griner, and the Sooners will face her lean frame twice this February.
OU will travel south for the first matchup on Feb. 2 before hosting the Bears on Feb. 27.
If the polls remain significantly unchanged during that month-long stretch, the Sooners will face ranked opponents in five of their eight scheduled games. Iowa State, Texas A&M, Connecticut and the two Baylor games guarantee the Sooners will have to pull out the big guns in order to survive the conference and set themselves up for the tournament in March.
