The No. 3 Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team had a strong start to the season Saturday by beating Arizona State, No. 9 Nebraska and No. 13 Air Force to claim the Rocky Mountain Open title.
The Sooners won the tournament for the 12th time in a row by winning five out of the six team events — floor, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar — and finished the night with a score of 346.5.
The OU men fared well individually as well. Two Sooners, senior Steven Legendre and sophomore Jacob Dalton, set Rocky Mountain Open records. Legendre’s 16.4 on vault and Dalton’s 15.1 on parallel bars were the highest scores in the open’s history. The two also kept a streak alive that goes back almost a decade by combining to win three of the six individual event titles.
Legendre won vault, and Dalton claimed first in floor and parallel bars. OU has claimed at least half of the individual event titles every year now since 2002. In addition to continuing their recent dominance of the event, the Sooners looked to deserve their No. 3 ranking by besting two ranked teams.
The team hopes to follow up the opening success with wins in back-to-back home meets. First, the Sooners host Ohio State on Saturday.
