OU groups to host same-sex marriage panel discussion
by Zachary Herring/The Daily  |  February 15, 2011  |

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer association will host a gay-marriage panel from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in George Lynn Cross Hall, Room 123.

The panel — titled “Equality in Love? I do” — will present aspects of gay marriage, including the laws, history, religious views and how gay marriage is perceived by the American culture.

Guest speakers attending the panel will include Trina Hope from the University’s Sociology Department, Elizabeth Bangs from the College of Law and Kathy McCallie of The Church of Open Arms UCC.

It is important to educate students about same-sex marriage due to the spotlight on it, Women's Outreach Center Coordinator Kathy Moxley said.

The gay-marriage panel comes during a time of uncertainty and excitement for same-sex couples. Though gay marriage is somewhat more widely accepted than it once was, many Americans still disapprove. Forty-eight percent of adults are opposed to same-sex marriage, according to a 2010 Pew Research Center study.
