Students can celebrate the culture of Africa when a campus organization hosts Africa Week from Feb. 21 to 26.
The African Student Association organizes the event through the International Advisory Committee with the help of fundraising and sponsorships. This year’s theme is “Illuminate Africa,” in which students can experience African culture’s diversity.
The week’s events include a movie night, a cultural fair, food tasting, a beauty pageant and an African night.
These events are beneficial to the organization because it showcases the culture of Africa, said Dawit Dagnaw, association spokesman.
“We want as many people as possible to attend because it’s all about cultural understanding with lots of entertainment,” said Dagnaw, petroleum engineering sophomore.
Dagnaw, who is originally from Ethiopia, said the activities of Africa Week are open to all OU students, not just association members.
Students interested in participating can take part in most of the festivities for free, though tickets for the beauty pageant and African Night cost $7 each. If students want to attend both events, they can get a ticket price of $12.
