UOSA to host meet-and-greet forum at 3 p.m. today
by   |  February 8, 2011  |

Students wanting to address their concerns with OU student government can meet for free coffee with various UOSA representatives at 3 p.m. today in Cate Main Center.

This is the second Coffee With UOSA that has been held with Housing & Food to encourage students to talk with representatives about student government.

UOSA representatives wanted to get to know the people they serve and what is important for them to change on campus, event coordinator Garrett Watkins said.

Representatives from Student Congress and the Executive Branch will attend, according to the Facebook event. Watkins said he did not know who specifically would be having coffee with interested students.

Watkins said how important it is that the students who are not involved yet shouldn’t feel intimidated when meeting a campus leader — which often keeps students from joining campus organizations.

“Really we’re all equal, but I don’t think a lot of students see it that way,” said Watkins, University College freshman. “We might have a voice, but really it’s just the student body’s voice and we need their help to change it for the better.”

UOSA first held the forum last year as an idea of former UOSA President Katie Fox and Director of Internal Affairs Ally Glavas, who wanted a more open forum on the workings of student government and how to get involved, said Joe Sangirardi, UOSA director of External Affairs and last year’s coordinator for Coffee With UOSA.

UOSA created the forum specifically for younger students looking to get more involved in student government, said Sangirardi, letters sophomore. Toward the end of the meet-and-greet, more students who weren’t involved came up to talk to student leaders.

“[The students] wanted a little guiding, someone maybe they could talk to or they could have a connection with who could guide them through the process,” he said.

Plans for more meet-and-greet forums later in the semester for students to meet their UOSA representatives include hosting at more campus locations with high student traffic such as at the Huston Huffman Center, Sangirardi said.
