More freshmen mean more work for Housing and Food Services
by   |  August 19, 2011  |

OU Housing and Food Services estimates a 9-percent increase in the number of freshmen living on campus this year compared to last year.

OU food services is prepared to serve about 10 percent more meals this academic year compared to last year for the 3,600 freshmen who will be living in the OU residence halls this fall, Housing and Food Services spokeswoman Lauren Royston said.

OU guarantees housing to incoming freshmen and with the increase in residents, rumors began to circulate that super-suites, understood by many as a room designed for three people, were stretched to accommodate four people.

Royston said students assigned to super-suites are given the opportunity to request a fourth roommate. The rooms are designed to accommodate up to four people, Royston said.

“The housing process remains fluid through the first few weeks of classes to support students as they transition to OU and the new academic year,” Royston said.

Housing and Food Services has asked students to cancel their housing plans immediately if they are not enrolled for fall.

Feeding a larger freshmen class is another task Housing and Food Services must tackle.

This academic year, Couch Restaurants will be available on the weekends, in addition to several other campus restaurants. Students will be able to utilize online tools, such as the Nutrition Calculator and Facebook fan pages to keep up with the many offers in the university community.

Students have the option of more than 20 campus restaurants, a number of assorted meal plans and various hours of availability. The number of freshmen on campus will increase, but meal plan options remain the same.

Despite the large freshman class, so far some incoming students like University College freshman Caroline Jackson don’t seem to be fazed by the size.

“I know about the class size because they told me I have to enter a lottery to get football tickets because there were so many of us,” Jackson said. “I don’t think it’s going to make much difference except there might be more job opportunities.”

Jackson was not the only one who thought increased services might lead to job opportunities.

“A couple more jobs should be open to students,” University College freshman Chelsea Greer said. “I think OU is accommodated for the amount of students.”

Faculty, staff and current students from various majors and organizations are ready to welcome new Sooners. Royston said Housing and Food Services will continue to create opportunities and spaces for students.
