While Norman Music Festival may be known for its music, the festival doesn’t stop there.
Cinematic Artists of Norman and the Norman Music Festival have incorporated Oklahoma’s film community into the mix by putting on a music-video contest — 2011 Music Video Picks.
“I’m always really surprised by the high quality stuff that comes out of Oklahoma,” said Jack Patchell, Music Video Picks chairman and OU alumnus. “I guess other people from the other parts of the country kind of underestimate us.”
A panel of three judges narrowed down 31 submissions to 10. Judges were:
• Beau Leland, local filmaker
• Melissa Sue Lopez, musician and local filmmaker
• Trent Bell, owner of Bell Labs Recording Studio in Norman who has worked with The Flaming Lips.
This weekend, viewers will vote on which video will win by putting a donation into the jar corresponding with their favorite video.
All the donations will go to the Norman Arts Council.
Lopez said she believes it is important to showcase the videos.
“Music videos are an essential part of music today, because the multimedia experience brings viewers/listeners to a whole new dimension, the world of the artist,” Lopez said.
The music videos will be screened for free tonight at various Norman locations, including Dreamer Concepts.
Cinematic Artists of Norman is excited to be involved in Norman Music Festival, chairwoman Cassandra Ketrick said.
“It’ll be fun to be at these locations that are in the heart of Norman and the heart of the festival,” Ketrick said. “It will be a really nice viewing experience.”
Cinematic Artists of Norman is under the Norman Arts Council and was asked to host the Music Video Contest by the Norman Music Festival. The group is made up of many former OU students and those involved in the local film industry.
“Our goal is to get all ages and all skill sets in one room talking about filmmaking, it’s really a collaborative group,” Ketrick said.
People’s Pick voting will last until Friday and will be announced along with the Pro’s Pick on the Main Stage before festival headliner The Walkmen go on at 9:30 p.m.
The winners will receive prize packages donated by Grapevine Media and Freestyle Productions as well as two iPod shuffles donated by the OU IT store.
