Honors Dean David Ray to receive teaching award
by   |  April 28, 2011  |

Honors College Dean David Ray was named the 2011 recipient of the Otis Sullivant Award for Perceptivity on Wednesday.

Ray was selected by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation and a committee of OU faculty, staff, students and alumni, said Catherine Bishop, OU vice president for public affairs.

The committee looks for someone perceptive, insightful and empathetic, and Ray’s leadership style embodies these traits, Bishop said.

As an associate professor of political science, Ray is known for stimulating classroom discussion, getting to know his students and setting high expectations for them, Bishop said.

Ray has also organized more than 30 informal reading groups, over half of which he moderates, Bishop said.

The late Edith Kinney established the $500,000 Sullivant Prize endowment in January 2001 in honor of the late Otis Sullivant, a journalist known for his coverage of Oklahoma and national political news, Bishop said.

The award will be presented to Ray at noon on May 4 in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art along with a $20,000 prize, Bishop said.

It's nice to see good things happen to teachers who really care about students.
