OU was selected as one of 311 Green Colleges in a guide published by The Princeton Review.
Schools included in the guide were chosen based on a 50-question survey conducted among universities about environmental and sustainability commitments and initiatives, university spokesman Chris Shilling said.
703 universities were polled and 311 reached the 80th percentile cutoff, Shilling said.
OU’s selection could be attributed to many efforts, including a recent conversion to energy-friendly light bulbs, the use of sustainable packaging materials by Housing and Food Services, the increased presence of recycling bins and recycling options on campus and the watering of campus grounds from wells rather than drinkable sources, Shilling said.
Ideas from and efforts by students and student groups such as Our Earth are equally responsible for the recognition, Shilling said.
OU will continue to develop big ideas while encouraging staff and students to do the everyday things that improve the environment, Shilling said.
“The work is just beginning,” Shilling said.
OU was selected for the guide last year as well, Shilling said.
