Race-relations pioneer signing books today

George Henderson, founder of OU’s Human Relations program and the first black homeowner in Norman, will be on campus today to sign copies of his memoir, “Race and the University” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Beaird Lounge in the Oklahoma Memorial Union.

The book provides Henderson’s viewpoint of the civil rights movement in the 1960s, with the OU campus as the setting.

“I think all people should know their history and this is an important part of the university’s past,” Henderson said. “I think something very important happened here and very few people really know the intricacies of what it was like, what sacrifices were made and what some of the outcomes were.”

Students interested in learning this history from one of the speakers at the memorial service for Martin Luther King Jr. can buy the book for $24.95 while they are waiting to have it signed. He also has tentative appearances scheduled in Tulsa, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area.
