For the second week in a row, the Sooners’ offense showcased a new formation, and the Baylor Bears had no answer for it.
After OU’s opening possession, the Sooners came back with a diamond backfield formation that put senior running back DeMarco Murray, freshman running back Roy Finch and freshman fullback Trey Millard on the field at the same time.
The Sooners scored three times with the formation: once on a Murray run, then on misdirection to Finch and finally on a short pass to junior wide receiver Ryan Broyles after a fake hand-off to Murray.
Last week against Texas Tech, OU unveiled its own version of the Wildcat offense, using direct snaps to Murray. The Sooners also used an option pitch play.
There has clearly been a concerted effort by OU’s coaches to get more creative offensively.
After Texas A&M took away the Sooners’ typical swing passes and bubble screens, OU has been finding ways to get its most dynamic offensive players together on the field in position to make plays, and the results have shown on the scoreboard.
OU averaged 49 points and 512 offensive yards in their last two wins after the 19-point output against A&M.
OU’s offensive resurgence has come just in time for what could potentially be a high-scoring Bedlam matchup in Saturday Stillwater, where the Cowboys have been using the diamond formation that the Sooners borrowed.
If offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson has any more tricks up his sleeve, he will likely show all his cards against Oklahoma State with the Big 12 South title on the line.
