Ryan Broyles made OU’s last home game of the season something special — something many Sooner fans may never see again in their lifetimes.
The junior wide receiver tied or snapped five records in Saturday’s 45-7 blowout win over Texas Tech, solidifying himself as one of the best receivers in OU history by surpassing or matching former Sooner great Mark Clayton (2001-04) in all but one category.
On the second play of the game, sophomore quarterback Landry Jones connected with Broyles for a 15-yard catch, moving him into sole possession of OU’s career record for receptions. Broyles entered the game tied with Clayton’s 221 career receptions.
But he was just beginning.
By the end of the first half, Broyles also broke his own single-season receptions record after catching five balls for a season total of 91. By the end of the game, Broyles had added three more to extend his record to 94, surpassing his 2009 mark of 89.
Entering the game, Broyles had 29 career receiving touchdowns, just two short of Clayton’s record (31).
Even though Broyles didn’t have a touchdown by the end of the first quarter, he grabbed a pair in the second to tie Clayton atop the Sooner record book. He was just one end zone dance shy of becoming a Sooner legend, and he didn’t have to wait long.
Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson dialed Broyles’ number with just under six minutes left in the third quarter for touchdown No. 3, the 32nd of his career.
The Norman native’s 119 yards Saturday marked his eighth 100-yard game this season and the 15th of his career, tying Clayton’s program records for both.
Broyles’ pursuit of Sooner history all culminated in one electrifying performance Saturday.
“It’s a good feeling,” Broyles said. “It feels even better to win on top of that. [The career touchdowns record] was just one of those things that I marked and I looked at even as a freshman. It was one of those numbers that I wanted to chase, and it came my way.”
For the former Norman High standout who grew up watching the other great Bob Stoops Era receivers, his familiarity with the players he’s now bested made Saturday’s record-breaking performance even more meaningful.
“It means so much to me,” he said. “It’s always been one of those things that I wanted to meet: the expectations of being a wide out at Oklahoma.”
His special talent has not gone unnoticed, coach Bob Stoops said, also noting he has never seen a player quite like Broyles.
“I’ve said everything you can say about Ryan,” Stoops said. “He’s a great player. He just has a knack for adjusting to the football like nobody I’ve ever seen, and he’s got the surest hands of anyone I’ve ever been around. He can do it all, and he’s a special player for sure.”
Of all who appreciate Broyles’ playmaking ability, none can be more pleased than Wilson, who made the call to give Broyles a shot at a touchdown even though the Sooners were leading 38-7.
“I thought he needed one touchdown for that career deal, so that was kind of nice that he got to do that at our house in front of the fans,” Wilson said. “If I was pushing the envelope by throwing that fade route on the goal line, I was doing that for him because of how much I appreciate him.”
After all Broyles has accomplished in his Sooner career, there’s just one thing he lacks: career receiving yards. He lacks just 239 yards to break Clayton’s program-record 3,241 yards.
If Broyles chooses to forego the NFL Draft and return for his senior season, he would have another full year to break every record and extend his numbers to near unreachable numbers.
That thought, he said, was an enticing one and would unanimously enshrine him as the greatest receiver in OU football history.
“I feel like if I stay here — or when I do stay here — that’s going to happen,” Broyles said. “I’m just going to continue to catch the balls that come my way and make things happen.”
When he stays here?
“Yes, when I stay here,” Broyles said.
