OU soccer defeated Texas A&M 1-0 on Friday with a goal by senior forward Whitney Palmer in overtime to advance to the Big 12 title game in San Antonio, Texas. The Sooner’s battled through the team’s seventh overtime game of the season to advance to the championship finals for the first time in program history.

The No.4 Sooners (12-7-2, 5-4-1 Big 12) downed No.5 Texas 1-0 on Wednesday night to advance to the semifinals matchup against A&M. OU advanced to the semifinals just once before after beating the Longhorns 2-0 in 2000.

Palmer’s goal came on a rebound shot off the goal post by Dria Hampton in the 102nd minute. While the senior continues to rewrite the Sooner record books, Palmer’s ninth goal of the season couldn’t have come at a better time for the team.

With Palmer’s score, the Sooner’s avenged a 2-1 overtime defeat to Aggies in the regular season on Oct. 22 in College Station, Texas. The Sooners handed A&M their first loss since Sept. 24 while improving to 2-15 in all-time meetings against the Aggies.

Friday’s shutout was the second-consecutive shutout for OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire. The sophomore from Richland Hills, Texas, finished the game with six saves against the Aggies. As a Sooner, Devonshire has started 39 games in goal for the Sooners.

The Sooners held a 10-5 shot advantage during the first half of the game. A&M’s Merritt Mathias had all three shots on goal for the Aggies, forcing Devonshire to make the important saves in goal.

Following a penalty by Zoe Dickson in the 51st minute, Mathias took a free kick that forced Devonshire to make the quick save in the middle of the net. Mathias finished with five shots on goal for the contest.

The Sooners will face the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the championship game at noon Sunday at Blossom Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
