OKLAHOMA CITY — The No. 2-seeded Sooners claimed a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the No. 7-seeded Kansas Jayhawks to open Big 12 Championship in the early Thursday morning hours at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
Despite a three-hour rain delay that pushed the last two games for the opening day of the pool play later into the night and early morning hours, the Sooners were led from behind with a double by sophomore right fielder Cody Reine to score the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Kansas (31-24-1) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after a walk allowed by OU right-handed starting pitcher Michael Rocha sent KU’s third baseman Tony Thompson to first base. A wild pitch later in the inning by Rocha allowed Thompson to advance to second. With two outs, KU’s Brett Lisher singled to short and advanced to second on a throwing error. Thompson would score an unearned run off of the same error to give Kansas the lead.
OU (43-14) would not score its first run until the bottom of the fifth when Cody Reine led off the inning with a single to right.
Junior second baseman Danny Black advanced Reine with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher. Reine then advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring the Sooner’s first run to tie up the game off of junior designated hitter Rick Eisenberg’s single to short stop.
The Sooner’s scored one run off of two hits and left one runner on base for the inning.
KU responded quickly in the top of the sixth inning after lead-off batter Brandon Macias was hit by a pitch and advanced to third off of a single by Robby Price to right. A sacrifice fly by Thompson to right field scored Macias to give the Jayhawks back the lead 2-1 through five and half innings.
OU finally registered their fourth straight comeback win against Kansas this season in the bottom of the ninth inning beginning with a lead-off single by sophomore third baseman Garrett Buechele.
Sophomore first baseman Cameron Seitzer then advanced the pinch runner for Buechele, sophomore Erik Ross, to second with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.
Sophomore catcher Tyler Ogle patiently battled through eight pitches before earning a walk to put two runners on base.
After Ross stole third, Reine stepped up to deliver a two RBI double to center field to score Ross and Ogle and give the Sooners the lead to win the game.
Rocha ended the game with a season high eight innings pitched and allowed only two runs off of five hits with six strikeouts.
Left handed pitcher Anthony Collazo finished a left on left matchup before senior right handed pitcher Jeremy Erben recorded the final two outs against the Jayhawks.
The Sooners return to play Baylor in the second game of pool play for the Big 12 Championship at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening.
Baylor outscored Kansas State 11-8 following the rain delay prior to OU’s game on Wednesday. Baylor is the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
