Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, and OU competed inside the Howard McCasland Field House for the 2010 Big 12 Championships all day Saturday.
For the first time since 2002, OU claimed individual titles.
"Three champions today," OU head coach Jack Spates said. "We had tremendous performances in virtually every match. Really, with the exception of one match, we wrestled better in every match than we had all year. So, it's just a great, great performance.
OU claimed three top-ranked seeds in junior Zack Bailey at 141 pounds, senior Kyle Terry at 149 pounds and senior Shane Vernon at 157 pounds.
All three advanced to the finals.
At 141 pounds, Bailey got the first points with an early takedown in the first period of the semifinals against ISU's No. 5 seed Dalton Jensen and never looked back. Bailey recorded five takedowns en route to a 11-6 decision, advancing him to the finals against OSU's No. 2 seed Jamal Parks.
In the finals, Bailey got the early lead, but a Parks takedown was enough for a Parks 3-2 decision.
At 149 pounds, Terry had similar success as Bailey, earning the easy 13-4 major decision over Missouri's No. 4 Nicholas Hucke.
Terry would advance to the finals to face ISU's No. 2 seed Mitch Mueller and was never playing from behind. Terry earned the 4-2 decision, the first individual champion on the night for OU.
At 157 pounds, Vernon earned the takedown with 48 seconds remaining in the first period, and that's he would need to assure a 4-1 victory over Nebraska's No. 5 seed Tyler Koehn.
In the finals against OSU's No. 3 seed Neil Erisman, Vernon recorded a slim victory. After a 4-4 tie with 56 seconds remaining, Vernon recorded a takedown and sealed a 6-5 win.
But Bailey, Terry and Vernon weren't the only OU individuals to excel Saturday. Freshman and No. 2 seed freshman Jarrod Patterson advanced to the finals at 125 pounds after winning 2-1 over OSU's No. 3 seed Chris Notte. In the final period, Notte gave a point to Patterson for fleeing the mat violation, ultimately sealing the win for Patterson.
Patterson would advance to the finals to face ISU's No. 1 seed Andrew Long. Patterson recorded two takedowns, ultimately earning the 5-3 decision over Long.
"It is a great feeling," Patterson said. "It was just last year I was wrestling in high school and I think I have come a long way since then. It is a big honor to be voted `Outstanding Wrestler' because a lot of other guys deserved it."
OU had three third place finishers, too.
After freshman Kendric Maple earned the 3-0 decision over Nebraska's No. 4 seed C.J. Napier in the semifinals, Maple moved on to the third-place match against Missouri's No. 5 seed Nathan McCormick at 133 pounds.
Maple simply dominated, leading 6-0 after the first period, ultimately earning the 14-3 major decision over McCormick.
At 165 pounds, freshman Tyler Caldwell was slotted in the third-place match against OSU's No. 3 seed Alex Meade, and earned the 4-0 shut out over Meade after a scoreless first period.
Senior Eric Lapotsky went on to have a successful day, earning the third of three third-place finishes for OU. Lapotsky battled Missouri's Brent Haynes, and although the first period was scoreless, Lapotsky sealed the 5-1 decision after a reversal with one minute and forty seconds remaining.
OU's final action is the NCAA Championships all day in Omaha, Neb. on March 18.
