Freshman Jeremy Adams holds his position on the parallel bars Feb. 27 during an OU men's gymnastics home meet in McCasland Field House.

The top-ranked OU men’s gymnastics team dropped a heartbreaker Sunday as the Sooners left Lincoln, Neb., with a split decision against No. 2 Stanford and No. 9 Nebraska.

The Sooners (9-1, 4-1 MPSF) came into the meet undefeated, but ran into a Cardinal team at the top of its game.

Just as OU set a season-high team score last weekend, Stanford matched the Sooners with its own NCAA-best total the very same night.

And when the Sooners set another season-best score Sunday by posting a 360.300, the Cardinal came back with another NCAA-high total of 361.650.

The Cornhuskers would round out the competition in third with a score of 347.500.

Junior Steven Legendre won his second-consecutive all-around title, but could not lead the Sooners to another first-place finish.

While OU came up short in the team competition, Sunday’s meet turned out to be a showcase for the Sooners in the individual standings.

Freshmen Alex Naddour and Jacob Dalton finished in second and third in the all-around behind Legendre, with only six-tenths of a point separating the three Sooners.

Legendre also took home the individual event title on floor exercise, while Naddour won on pommel horse with a team-high 14.900.

Senior Corey English also posted a career-high on parallel bars with a 15.250, but his score would only be good enough for second as English was eclipsed on the final rotation by Stanford’s Nicholas Noone.

OU will look to rebound from its first loss of the year when the Sooners face off Saturday against Big Ten powerhouse and fifth-ranked Ohio State at 4 p.m. inside St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
