The No. 20 baseball team ended its three-game weekend series and seven-game road trip on the right note with its 11-3 victory over the Richmond Spiders Sunday in Jacksonville, Fla.
The Sooners (6-1) won two of their three games in the Jacksonville Tournament, and relied on their bats to carry them to their two victories.
In the two wins against Richmond and Valparaiso, OU had 24 hits – 10 hits in the first win and 14 hits in the second – and totaled 23 runs. The Sooners were held to a season-low nine hits in their 4-3 loss to the Jacksonville.
Sophomore third baseman Garrett Buechele led OU’s offense in the series where hitting was spread out up and down the lineup. Buechele collected seven hits in 13 at-bats while driving in five runs and increasing his batting average to .500 on the season.
Buechele’s average is the highest among any OU player who has played in at least five games this season.
The Sooners also had to rely on their bullpen following poor outings from their starting pitchers in the first two games of the series. In both of those games head coach Sunny Golloway found a dependable arm in senior pitcher Jeremy Erben.
In Erben’s two outings, he threw 5 2/3 shutout innings, gave up one hit and struck out eight batters. He was credited with the win in OU’s 12-9 victory over Valparaiso and recorded his career-tying-high seven strikeouts during a four-inning performance in Saturday’s loss to Jacksonville.
The win was Erben’s second win of the season and his third of his career.
Junior pitcher Ryan Duke added another save to his collegiate resume. He pitched the final three outs of Friday’s win, raising his career saves mark to 19, which is nine behind OU’s career saves leader.
The Sooners play their first home game of the season against Texas-Arlington at 3 p.m. Tuesday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
