OU law student Emily Virgin has won the Democratic nomination for an open seat in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives.

Virgin will run against Republican nominee Kent Hunt in the general election for House District 44, which includes the OU campus. Hunt ran unopposed in Tuesday's primary elections.

The Democratic winner said if elected, she plans to vigorously promote public education.

"When I knocked on doors, starting in March, it became clear that education was the No. 1 issue," Virgin said. "So, I listened to the voters and made it my No. 1 issue, too."

The 23-year-old candidate received 52.7 percent of the vote Tuesday, defeating Tom Kovach, Isaiah McCaslin and Robert T. Murphy.

With all 15 precincts reporting, Virgin collected 1,474 votes — 808 more votes than Kovach, who finished second with 23.8 percent of the vote.

Although pleased with the primary victory, Virgin said, she knows she has much left to do.

Virgin said she now turns her attention to Hunt and the Nov. 2 finish line in the race to replace District 44's incumbent, Rep. Bill Nations, D-Norman, who is term-limited.

"The hard work is not over, though," she said on her campaign Facebook page. "On to November!"
