OKLAHOMA CITY — A new award for the top freshman in college basketball is being named for the late OU great Wayman Tisdale.
Organizers of the Wayman Tisdale Award say it will be presented each year to the freshman selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Tisdale died in Tulsa in May 2009 of cancer. He was a three-time All-American at OU before leaving after his junior season for a 12-year NBA career. He also was a member of the United States' gold-winning 1984 Olympic team.
Organizers say Tisdale's widow — Regina — is aware and "very receptive" of the award.
