Lieutenant governor candidate proposes legislative changes
by The Associated Press  |  July 7, 2010  |

A Democratic state senator running for lieutenant governor is proposing a series of changes to the way legislation is handled that he says would open the process to more public scrutiny.

Poteau Democrat Kenneth Corn said Wednesday the Legislature should be forced to comply with the state's Open Meetings and Open Records acts. Currently, the Legislature is exempt from those state laws.

Corn said he also wants to open up the conference committee process, which lawmakers often use to craft legislation in the waning days of session.

Corn has served in the Legislature for 12 years and is being forced to retire because of term limits.

He's the only Democrat running for lieutenant governor. The race includes five Republicans and one independent.
