OU track & field steadily race to the NCAA Championships
by   |  January 25, 2010  |

As the saying goes, "slow and steady wins the race." The OU track and field team may not be slow, but they steadily continued their march to the NCAA Championships last weekend at the Razorback Invitational.

Hurdler Malcom Anderson uses his teammates for motivation in his victories.

“Everybody [on the team] wants to win but everybody can’t win," Anderson said. "That pushes me more.”

Anderson was one of the runners who took first place in a sprint event. Junior Scottesha Miller won the women’s 60-meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.35; the sixth fastest time in the nation, while Anderson won the 60-meter hurdles.

Another Sooner, Sherine Wells finished third in the 60-meter dash and Sooner hurdler Ronnie Ash took second to Anderson.

Anderson attributed his victory to improving technique and strength in practice.

In the 3,000 meter run, the Sooners captured the top four spots. Jeremy Sudbury won the event with a time of 8:27.13. Freshman Bobby Nicolls, competing unattached, was second with a time of 8:27.67. Kevin and Bill Kogel (the 2009 Big 12 Cross Country Newcomer of the Year) took third and fourth respectively.

Sophmore Mookie Salaam won second among collegiate competitors in the 200-meter dash. He entered the meet with the nation’s best time of 21.11.

The women’s 200-meter dash also saw a provisional mark as Miller finished fourth overall and second among college competitors with a season-best time of 23.78.

Senior Latoya Greaves, the 2008 Big 12 champion recorded the fastest prelims time among college athletes before withdrawing from the events’ finals.

In field events, Senior Kevin Snyder took fourth in the high jump clearing 6-8.75 (2.05) on his first attempt, while Junior Jasmine Simmons won second in the women’s triple jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 42-4.00 (12.90).

Throwers stayed in Norman for the Oklahoma Christian Invitational. Senior Amy Backel took first place in women’s shot put with a personal-best distance and redshirt Freshmen Karen Shump took a close second. Tia Brooks and Brittany Borman took third and fourth respectively.

Also in Norman, Redshirt Junior K.P. Singh won the men’s weight throw by over thirteen feet.

Amy Backel (shot put), Karen Shump (shot put) and K.P. Singh (weight throw) all recorded NCAA provisional distances marks needed to be considered as at-large selections for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Next weekend the Sooners compete at home to host their first indoor meet of the season, the J.D. Martin Invitational.
