OU men, without leader Warren, lose again on the road
by   |  January 25, 2010  |

Road terrors continued as the Willie Warren-less OU men's basketball team (11-8, 2-3 Big 12) left Lubbock Saturday with a heart-breaking 75-65 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders (14-5, 2-3 Big 12) marking their second consecutive road loss.

At first, the absence of Warren was unnoticeable as the Sooners, led by freshman guard Tommy Mason-Griffin and senior forward Tony Crocker, went into the locker room at halftime with a comfortable 31-23 lead. Crocker was one rebound short of a double-double in the first half.

The second half was a different story. Tech came out firing on all cylinders led by forward Mike Singletary, who finished with 24 points and 10 boards, playing all 40 minutes.

Warren's absence became very apparent in the second half as the team could not hang on to its lead, being outscored 52-34 in the half. Warren missed the game after rolling his ankle in practice earlier in the week.

Turnovers continued to be the story of road games for the young Sooner team and the game at Texas Tech was no different.

The Red Raiders racked up an alarming 24 points off turnovers to the Sooners' seven. Every player who had minutes in the game Saturday had at least one turnover, which brought the total to 16. Tech had just eight turnovers in the game.

Mason-Griffin racked up 26 points in the contest to lead all scorers, setting a new career-high for the young Houston native. He also added seven rebounds, had just one turnover and played all 40 minutes.

Freshman forward Tiny Gallon did not start the game due to disciplinary issues and received just 16 minutes because of foul trouble. Gallon ended his night with just five points, four rebounds and four turnovers while also fouling out with just less than five minutes remaining.

Senior Ryan Wright filled in for Gallon in the starting lineup, finishing with seven points and rebounds in 21 minutes. He fouled out only minutes after Gallon did, leaving the Sooners with few post options as the game got out of hand.

Crocker finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds, recording his sixth career double-double. The long-time Sooner combined with Mason-Griffin for 46 of the team’s 65 points, 71 percent of the Sooners offense.

Iowa State comes to Norman Wednesday night for the team’s next contest. As of now, Warren will be playing in the game, his ankle being just a minor injury that should be fine by game-time Wednesday. Tip off will be at 8 p.m.
