Organic. All-natural. Energy efficient. Fair trade.
These are words we hear every day. Going green is all the rage, and rightfully so. Recycling trash and biking to class or work are a couple ways to be environmentally-friendly, but who ever thinks about our clothes affecting the our planet’s health?
Birdie, a charming shop located on Campus Corner, is devoted to selling goods that help sustain nature.
Birdie is a combination of flowers, sustainable clothing, housewares, and gifts, owner Katie Huskerson said.
“Everything is either organic, fair trade, contains recycled content, or is handmade,” Huskerson said.
This new shop has a certain aesthetic about it.With Sigur Ros playing overhead and the smell of fresh-cut flowers enveloping the entire shop, it feels as though you have stepped into a gorgeous spring day during the dead of winter.
Extremely friendly and inviting, eco-driven Huskerson obviously has impeccable taste.
Birdie carries T-shirts and hoodies made with organic cotton, handmade denim and jewelry and several Zooey Deschanel-esque dresses.
Also sold are ceramics, paintings by
an OU student and flowers in 100-percent recycled vases.
Handmade items come from a wide array of locations, including Oklahoma, Texas and other states, as well as international locations such as New Zealand.
Huskerson is always on the lookout for new vendors and merchandise. In fact, she would love to feature more OU student artwork in the store.
In the spring, Birdie plans to introduce furniture made with reclaimed wood and eco-fabric upholstery to its inventory.
Huskerson comes from a long line of family-owned businesses and is a fourth-generation florist.
All plants sold in Birdie are grown by her family’s business in McAlester, Okla. She and her husband opened the shop in October last year, all in all a three-and-a- half-year process.
“We originally wanted to do vintage clothing, but fair trade goods have become more affordable and demand has increased,” Huskerson said. “My husband and I felt like Norman needed a unique shop that sold youthful clothes made with integrity.”
And that is exactly what Birdie is—a darling shop with a fresh take on how to preserve our planet. Birdie brings conviction to the consumer and opens our eyes to a better way to buy.
“Fair trade is a more responsible way to spend,” Huskerson said. “You know there is integrity behind it.”
