Sooner track & field travels to Razorback Invitational
by   |  January 22, 2010  |

The OU Track and Field team hopes to continue their winning stride this weekend after a successful competition last weekend at Texas A&M.

Head Coach Martin Smith was very pleased with the team’s performance last weekend at College Station.

"I hope to use last weekend's meet as a catalyst for the future success of both teams," Smith said. "We know what we have with the men's team, and what we need to see, and the women's team had a very strong day and indicated what it can be when it counts."

Smith said the team utilizes a ‘periodization’ training technique; combining different training routines to create ‘peak’ performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships this spring. He also said effective communication is key to this method.

"Competitions measure where the team is in training and what areas need tweaking to reach a peak performance," Smith said. "Athletes need to know why things are happening."

Smith said the individual coaches have done a good job laying out plans for the upcoming meet.

"The athletes are very motivated and have a clear understanding of what needs to be done," Smith said.

OU knows what is at stake this weekend. Junior Ti’Anca Mock will attempt to defend her long jump and triple jump titles from the 2009 Razorback Invitational.

Sophomore Mookie Salaam, who holds the nation’s fastest 200-meter dash for the season, will run against two top-10 athletes: Baylor’s No. 1 Trey Harts and Oral Roberts’ No. 6 Marvin Bonde.

Likewise, the women’s 200-meter dash will showcase a battle as OU senior Scottesha Miller, ranked No. 8, races Baylor’s No. 2 Tiffany Townsend. Junior Ronnie Ash will make his first 60-meter hurdle run of the season.

The team will send athletes to both the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville Ark. and selected throwers to the Oklahoma Christian Invitational in Norman.
