Over the weekend, the OU wrestling team managed to rebound from a heartbreaking loss in the semifinals to finish in third place at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.
After streaking past Bucknell (6-5) in the opening round and sending No. 18 Virginia (10-3) to the consolation bracket, the second-seeded Sooners finally met their match in a stunning 18-16 loss at the hands of No. 11 Lehigh (9-3) on Saturday.
No. 10 Oklahoma (8-1-1) was looking to remain undefeated against the third-seeded Mountain Hawks, but fell short in blowing a 16-0 lead and suffering its first dual loss of the season.
Freshmen Jarrod Patterson (125 pounds) and Kendric Maple (133 pounds) had OU out to an early 9-0 lead with wins in their respective weight classes.
Fifth-ranked redshirt junior Zack Bailey (141 pounds) and fourth-ranked redshirt senior Kyle Terry (149 pounds) followed with victories to build the lead to 16 points.
But those would be the last points of the dual for the Sooners as Lehigh went on to win the last six matches and advance to the finals to take on top-seeded and No. 4 Oklahoma State.
OU had little time to analyze the loss however, as the Sooners would need to recover quickly in order to take on a tough Penn State team.
In the third-place match held later that day, Oklahoma would go on to rebound in the consolation bracket and defeat the No. 14 Nittany Lions (8-3-1) by a 22-15 margin and notch its fourth Top-20 win of the season.
Eighth-ranked redshirt junior Jeff James (174 pounds), third-ranked senior Eric Lapotsky (197 pounds), Maple, Bailey and Terry all logged victories in OU’s win to clinch a 3-1 record for the Sooners over the weekend.
Bailey (14-5) and Terry (16-2) were the only wrestlers to turn in 4-0, undefeated records for the Sooners in the tournament.
"Overall, it was a good weekend," head coach Jack Spates said. "We had an exceptional first day and then dropped a heartbreaker in the semifinals today where we failed to seal the deal.
“Our team was greatly disappointed and we had an opportunity to bounce back against a great Penn State team this evening, which we did. I think it shows the character of our guys by not hanging our heads and ending with a great win."
Oklahoma will be back in action Saturday as the team heads to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Lonestar Duals, where the Sooners will take on Brown, Harvard, Nebraska-Kearney and Northwestern.
OU looks to be the favorite as the Sooners are the only ranked team in the tournament, at No. 11 according to the latest InterMat college rankings released Tuesday.
