Baseball drops first game of the season, 4-3

Another game in Florida; another unsafe lead, but the No. 20 baseball team was not able to come from behind to win in its 4-3 loss to the Jacksonville Dolphins Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla.

The loss ends the Sooners’ five-game winning streak and drops their record to 5-1.

The Sooners scored a run in each of the two first innings of the game on an RBI-single by freshman first baseman Drew Harrison and a solo home run by freshman designated hitter Max White, but senior pitcher J.R. Robinson could not hold the lead.

Robinson was cruising through the three innings, but the fourth inning marked the beginning of his demise. In the fourth, Robinson gave up three runs on three hits, and gave up a solo home run in the fifth before head coach Sunny Golloway opted to bring in senior pitcher Jeremy Erben.

Robinson pitched four-plus innings and allowed four runs while giving up five hits and striking out two batters. He was credited with the loss.

Erben threw four shutout innings where he held Jacksonville’s bats to one hit while recording seven strike outs, but the Sooners’ offense could not provide him with any support. The Dolphins’ pitching staff allowed just one run after taking the lead in the fifth inning to hold on to the win.

OU was held to a season-low nine hits, three of which coming off the bat of sophomore third baseman Garrett Buechele.

OU will take the field against Richmond at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in Jacksonville to try to avoid a losing record during the road series. Junior pitcher Bobby Shore will start the game on the mound for the Sooners.
