Baseball sweeps San Diego State
by   |  February 22, 2010  |

The No. 22 baseball team proved it does not have a set blueprint on how to win games during its four-game sweep over the San Diego State this past weekend.

The Sooners (4-0) showed they could win relying on every aspect of their game.

OU was able to lean on its bullpen and hitters, who displayed they could launch balls out of the yard as well as successfully play small-ball, to win the first two games of the series 7-4 and 17-5 in come-from-behind fashion.

Neither of the starting pitchers in those games worked past the third inning. Both junior Zach Neal and senior J.R. Robinson pitched three innings and gave up three runs, but it was their inconsistency in the strike zone and high pitch count that caused head coach Sunny Golloway to call up on his bullpen early.

During the bullpen’s 12 innings of work Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, seven pitchers combined to allow three runs on 13 while striking out 14 Aztec batters.

Pitchers senior Jeremy Erben and junior Michael Rocha continued their dominance out of the bullpen from last season with performances this weekend that earned each pitcher victories in their personal win column. The two threw six innings while giving up three runs and, most importantly, giving OU hitters time to chip away at a one-run and four-run deficit.

And time was all the Sooners needed to come back and win the first two games.

Down by one run in the first game, OU plated five unanswered runs to overtake the lead and give sophomore pitcher Ryan Duke enough cushion to close out the game.

In the second game the Sooners were down 5-1 going into the sixth inning before their bats woke up. During the last four innings, OU mounted an all-out assault on the Aztecs by scoring 16 runs.

The second half of the series took on a different theme. While the first two games were dominated by the bullpen and hitters, the last two games, which OU won 9-5 and 5-2, featured two solid performances by the starting pitchers.

These two pitchers, freshman Ryan Gibson and junior Bobby Shore, may have put together the best outings any OU pitcher has since May 2009.

Gibson was able to masterfully silence SDSU’s bats through five innings while recording a weekend-high nine strikeouts. The Yukon native did not give up a run and allowed three hits while hitting the strike zone on 69.3 percent of his pitches.

Duke recorded his second save of the weekend to secure the victory for Gibson, and the save was Duke’s 18th as a Sooner. Duke now has sole possession of second place on OU’s career saves list, trailing Jeff Bajenaru who recorded 28 saves from 1999 to 2000.

Shore almost one-upped Gibson’s performance Sunday by allowing just one run during seven innings of work. In his first start at OU, Shore did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and ended the day giving up five hits while striking out five batters.

During the four-game sweep, Golloway was able to play 33 of the 34 players on the roster, allowing both the veterans and the newcomers to get used to game-time speed after facing only each other in practice and scrimmages for the last month.

The Sooners have the week off, and will resume play at 11 a.m. Friday in Jacksonville, Fla., in the Jacksonville Tournament. They open the tournament against Valparaiso.
