Men's golf takes on loaded field in Puerto Rico Classic

Saturday, February 20, 2010

The OU men’s golf team will tee off its second tournament of the spring Sunday when the Sooners head to Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Sooners are coming off a 12th-place finish at the Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas. In the tournament, the Sooners were never able to generate enough momentum to seriously challenge the teams at the top of the leaderboard.

Redshirt sophomore Riley Pumphrey will look to duplicate his success from San Antonio, where the Georgetown, Texas, native quietly collected his third top-25 finish of the year. Pumphrey moved up the leaderboard after each round of golf and carded his first collegiate hole-in-one during the second round.

Looking to rebound in Puerto Rico is senior Ben Blundell. Blundell shot an uncharacteristically high three-round total of 229 (+16) that left him in a tie for 49th, his lowest finish of the year.

In fact, Blundell’s first-round and second-round scores of 76 and 80 are the two highest totals the senior has shot this season. Previously, Blundell had finished no lower than 36th in OU’s four previous tournaments; earning top-15 finishes in the other three.

In the Puerto Rico Classic, OU will compete against seven top-40 teams, including Big 12 rivals No. 1 Oklahoma State and No. 10 Texas.

Competing alongside Pumphrey and Blundell will be sophomore Ben Klaus, junior Liam Logan and senior Tyler Rody; the same group head coach Ryan Hybl used last week in San Antonio.

The Sooners are scheduled to tee off at 6 a.m. (CT) Sunday in the three-day, 54-hole event held at the Rio Mar Country Club.
