The OU men’s golf team turned in a gritty performance in the final round to finish in 12th place at the Oak Hills Invitational Tuesday in San Antonio, Texas.
While the Sooners were in 12th after each of the first two rounds, OU was never able to gain any momentum on the final day of play in the 54-hole event.
OU was led by redshirt sophomore Riley Pumphrey, who fired a 2-over-par 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 22nd place.
Pumphrey had worked his way up the leaderboard into top-10 positioning, but fell back after a double bogey and a triple bogey on his 11th and 12th holes. The five-stroke swing dropped Pumphrey’s score from 2-under-par to 3-over-par for the round.
Regardless, Pumphrey would recover with a couple birdies to notch his third top-25 finish of the season.
The trio of senior Ben Blundell, sophomore Ben Klaus and junior Liam Logan all finished in a share of 49th place, while senior Tyler Rody ended the event in 61st place.
Defending champion and No. 17 Texas Tech took home the team title for the second-straight year with a two-stroke victory over Southeastern Louisiana after entering the final round in a deadlock with the Lions.
Philipp Westermann earned the individual title for Southeastern Louisiana, edging Dustin Garza of Wichita State by one shot to break a three-way tie at the beginning of the round.
Oklahoma will have only four days to recover before its next tournament Sunday in the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
