The ninth-ranked wrestling squad again won at home Sunday against No. 15 Oregon State on Senior Day, 25-6.
OU (16-2-1, 2-1-1 Big 12) couldn't have asked for a better last home appearance on the season as the team earned their sixth win over a top-20 team and marked the team’s second straight 16-win season.
"Big win, tough team," head coach Jack Spates said. "The final score was not indicative of their performance. Our guys battled and we won tough matches in the end. That's the kind of effort you want, and this is a great way to go into Bedlam."
Freshman Jarrod Patterson got the day started off well at 125 pounds, and earned the 8-1 decision over Jason Lara. Freshman Kendric Maple almost earned the victory, but fell short in the extra period after Oregon State's Kelly Kubec earned the takedown and a 5-3 decision.
The score was locked at 3-3 after two bouts.
After the close Maple loss, OU pulled its way to four straight victories: a 3-1 decision for redshirt junior Zack Bailey over Mike Mangrum at 141 pounds, a 15-3 major decision for Kyle Terry over RJ Pena at 149 pounds, a 5-4 decision for redshirt senior Chad Terry over Keegan Davis at 157 pounds, and a 7-5 decision for freshman Tyler Caldwell over Dan Brascetta at 165 pounds.
All four seniors for OU won Sunday, including Eric Lapotsky's 7-2 decision over Chad Hanke at 197 pounds.
Next OU will travel to Stillwater, OK. to perform against a tough Oklahoma State team Sunday.
“Bedlam is going to be great,” Spates said. “Oklahoma State has a great program and we are excited for the challenge. We have wrestled extremely hard the last two matches, just the way you want heading into Bedlam.”
