After trailing Nebraska 15-0 following the first four bouts, ninth-ranked OU (13-2-1, 1-1-1 Big 12) seemed like they would end the night with their third loss on the season.
However, the OU grapplers won the next six bouts, going on a 22-0 run and ultimately taking the match in Lincoln against Nebraska (9-9, 0-2) by a score of 22-15.
“Big 12 wins are tough to come by,” head coach Jack Spates said. “We are pleased to get the win, but we are a better team than we wrestled tonight. We weren’t as sharp as we have been. At the same time we had some guys show some great character to secure the win.”
It started well for the Cornhuskers at 174 pounds as No. 4 Stephen Dwyer got the major decision over OU's No. 18 Jeff James. The Nebraska trend continued as Josh Ihnen got the decision over OU's Erich Schmidtke at 184 pounds, No. 2 Craig Brester won by technical fall over OU's No. 6 Eric Laptosky at 197 pounds, and No. 19 Tucker Lane won by decision over OU's No. 12 Nathan Hernandez at HWT.
Up 15-0, that would be the last smile to the Cornhuskers night, as OU would win the following six bouts.
At 125 pounds, OU's true freshman No. 18 Jarrod Patterson (22-9) got the close decision over David Klingsheim, 4-3.
Another OU freshman showed off in the 133 pound bout, Kendric Maple (27-10) got the 4-0 decision and his first career Big 12 victory over C.J. Napier.
Then OU's No. 3 ranked Zack Bailey and Chad Terry got the 12-4 major decision at 141 pounds and by forfeit, respectively. That gave OU its first lead of the night, 16-15.
Shane Vernon (16-4) extended OU's lead to 19-15 after posting a late escape for a 2-0 win. Lastly, with a four point lead, Tyler Caldwell (23-9) sealed the win with a 3-0 decision at 165 pounds.
OU is traveling to Columbia, Mo., Saturday to battle No. 17 Missouri (7-4, 1-0 Big 12) at 7 p.m., and will try to win two Big 12 matches in a row for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign.
“Fans will see some great action on Saturday night,” Spates said. “One of the challenges for us will be in the upper-weights where we didn’t perform so well tonight. We will have to be much better than we were.”
