After a disappointing loss to rival Texas, the OU women’s basketball team will get another chance to take down a rival this weekend when the Sooners face Oklahoma State.

The Cowgirls are currently ranked No. 10 in the nation, but are coming off a loss themselves to No. 4 Nebraska. The OSU squad is led by senior guard Andrea Riley who averages over 25 points a contest.

The last time the Bedlam rivals met was last year in Norman where the Sooners sent the Cowgirls home with a 73-63 loss.

OU junior guard Danielle Robinson and OSU’s Riley are both the key to their respective team’s success and shutting the other down will be a must for a win.

Last year in both of OU’s wins, the Sooners managed to hold Riley to 25 and 29 points. Sounds like a lot, but the sharp shooter has been known to drop 40 points on any given night.

Robinson has been struggling as of late with foul trouble, which prevents her from being on the court long enough to lead the OU team. When Robinson is at her best, she is driving to the basket and adding 20-plus points for OU.

Other factors in the matchup are whether or not the guards receive any help for their supporting casts. OU’s Amanda Thompson is now averaging almost 10 rebounds and 12 points a game.

If Thompson can knock down the 10-foot jumper and fight on defense, the Sooners have a chance against the Cowgirls. OSU’s attention will focus on Tegan Cunningham who averages 17 points for the Stillwater squad. She gives the Cowgirls another solid option on offense if and when Riley is shut down.

The intrastate battle takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday in Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
