The Tuesday Noon Concert series returns today at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. The series combines visual art with live music, and will continue through the course of the semester.
Today's concert will feature OU's Ricardo Souza Percussion Studio, with a focus on percussion chamber music.
Organizers believe it is a unique opportunity to blend the arts.
“It’s a mutually beneficial concert series because we believe that people who
come to the concerts also will visit the artwork, and those who come for the
artwork will join us for the concert,” said Steven Curtis, director of the School of Music at OU.
Mary Jane Rutherford, community relations officer for the museum, also thinks the event does a good job of getting students, staff and the public together to enjoy the arts.
“Visitors are able to attend a concert and then go have a short lunch before
returning to work,” Rutherford said. “We have had a devoted number of regulars in the audience, some retired folks and university professors from numerous disciplines. Also, many music students attend to hear their professors and fellow students perform.”
The series is a collaboration between the OU School of Music and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum or Art. Each concert will last 30-minutes and takes place in the Sandy Bell Gallery in the museum.
The event is free to students and is also open to the public.
