Tuesdays with Corley: Aggies will go down fast

I like e-mails. Please send me some.

Here’s an e-mail I received last week from a Utah State alum named Anthony:

“I’ve been reading some articles that say the Sooners have had some ups and downs in scrimmages so far. With the influx of freshmen that are now on the depth charts and lack of real depth at receiver, do you see any way that this game verses an experienced, veteran Utah State team is closer than expected? I’m just trying to get your feel and take for this first game. I was thinking that the Aggies could hang for a quarter or so until the flood gates opened up.”

Good question, Anthony. But let me start with just how much it matters that Utah State is experienced.

Last season, the Aggies played the 77th strongest schedule in the country (according to USA Today), dragged down even further by their lackluster Western Athletic Conference counterparts. In contrast, the Sooners played the 22nd strongest schedule, helped along by the annual Red River Rivalry against the national championship “runner-up” and a trip to Lincoln, Neb., against the Big 12 North Division champs.

The Sooners were much more inexperienced, especially at receiver, last season. Despite all of OU’s struggles and injuries, the Sooners’ 8-5 rebuilding year in 2009 still trumps Utah State’s 4-8. The receiving corps is still a little sketchy, but they’ll enjoy the matchup against the Aggies’ secondary. Plus, the Aggies gave up 450 yards per game last year.

Plus, the game is in Norman. Not that it would really make a big difference if it were played in Logan, Utah, but the Sooners are riding a 30-game win streak at home. That’s the pure definition of homefield advantage.

As for whether it will stay close, the Sooners have been a team that goes up big quick. Against Idaho State last season, OU led 41-0 by halftime. I give the Aggies about seven minutes Saturday before the game is already out of their hands.
