Barry Switzer wins lawsuit after being sued over business deal
by The Associated Press  |  August 19, 2010  |

Former University of Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer has prevailed in a lawsuit filed against him by former OU wrestling coach Stan Abel.

Abel and former Sooner wrestler Mozaffar Jahanguiri sued Switzer in December for $187,000 and damages over a failed business deal involving an Oklahoma City restaurant. The lawsuit claimed Abel and Jahanguiri were promised their money back "on numerous occasions" over the years, but Switzer never paid up.

Switzer said he fulfilled his obligations in the deal.

On Wednesday, Cleveland County District Judge Tom Lucas granted Switzer's motion for summary judgment. Switzer's attorney, Armando Rosell of Oklahoma City, said the ruling essentially disposes of the case.

"I have always had great confidence in our legal system," Switzer said in a statement. "Judge Lucas did a great job in considering all the facets and interpreting and applying the law of Oklahoma. The right decision was reached."

Abel's attorney, Stanley Ward of Norman, did not immediately return a phone message on Thursday.

Switzer and Abel became acquainted when both were successful coaches at OU. Abel led the Sooners to the NCAA wrestling title in 1974 and four second-place finishes during his 21 years as coach. Under Switzer, Oklahoma won AP football championships in 1974, 1975 and 1985.
