Junior linebacker Austin Box may miss the start of the season with a back injury that could keep him out for three to six weeks.
According to head coach Bob Stoops, the Enid native’s injury was not the result of a hit, but it flared up over the weekend.
Defensive coordinator Brent Venables said that although Box had been playing well, he had not been solidified as a starter.
“There were a number of guys that were in contention,” Venables said. “We’ll keep massaging that here over the next couple of weeks until we get started.”
This isn’t the first time Box has been hindered by injuries in his collegiate career. He has also struggled with knee and elbow injuries in the past.
“He’s tough, but he’s frustrated,” Venables said. “He has a lot invested in this program, and he’s had a terrific offseason. He’ll battle back.”
Box is one of the leaders of the defense, being one of the more experienced players on the defensive roster, Venables said.
“Sunday night I talked to [Box], and it really is heartbreaking,” redshirt freshman linebacker Tom Wort said. “That feeling of getting hurt and having your season taken away from you is something you never want to feel.”
Venables said Wort is the leader among the contenders to step into that position. Wort has less experience than Box but said he feels he is well prepared.
“I got here early, so I’ve been through two springs and two summers, so I’ve had a lot of time in the film room and a lot of good guys to learn from,” Wort said. “Ryan Reynolds is one of the guys who really knew the defense, and I used to work with him every day so I feel comfortable about the defense.”
The competition with Box during the offseason was a boost for both players, said Wort.
“Competition definitely drives you,” Wort said. “We push off each other and make each other better.”
Wort said he would continue working hard in practice, with the attitude that his position is still up for competition.
“I have to establish myself and prove myself every day,” Wort said. “Now that there is one less guy in competition, I can’t take it easy.”
Sophomore linebackers Jayden Bird and Daniel Franklin are also working for the position, Venables said.
