“What do I do about my class?”
First, look at your class attendance policy. Attendance policies vary widely, from strict mandatory attendance to no policy at all.
“I encourage students to come to class often, and I do know many professors that do take daily attendance. But, at the same time, I feel that students are adults and can make the decision themselves,” says Ian Ramjohn, professor of botany and ecology.
“I usually don’t miss class unless
I’m . . . in the emergency room,” says Tara Mouser, anthropology junior.
Next, email your professor before your class. This is usually the most efficient way to let them know your condition and to get the homework assignment you missed.
“Usually professors are understanding and work with you,” says Jenna Ross, interior design junior.
Finally, a word of advice for sick days that coincide with due dates: If you have an exam or a big paper due in class, it’s best to simply go unless you’ve made prior arrangements with your professor or friend from your class who agreed to turn in a paper for you.
“I can’t get out of bed, let alone go look for something to eat. What do I do?”
If you’re feeling so horrible that you can’t get yourself up and around, there are several solutions to getting a decent meal.
First, you could always call Room Service from Cate ala Carte. This service will deliver your meal to you if you’re living in the residence halls and do not want to venture out. A full menu of what Room Service offers can be found at food.ou.edu.
Another option can be found in the Union or in Cate Food Court. If you have a generous friend or roommate, they can go get the food for you. Most restaurants offer to-go options for students to take with them.
Finally, Xcetera, the on-campus convenience store, is located in Walker Tower and can be a quick and easy solution to finding food. Xcetera makes available a wide variety of food, such as soup, crackers and orange juice, perfect for someone looking to get healthy again.
“What if I need to go to the doctor?”
OU’s Goddard Health Center offers a wide variety of treatment options for students. It is located within walking distance of the dorms.
“When you come to Goddard, it’s just like going to the doctor’s office,” says Maggie Pool, Goddard Health Services Representative.
In addition to traditional medical staff, Goddard houses a wide variety of other services, including an in-house pharmacy for added convenience. Goddard is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and accepts appointments as well as walk-ins. For more information, visit goddard.ou.edu.
The closest major hospital is Norman Regional, located at 901 N. Porter St. Urgent Care clinics are also options for students who need help fast. East Norman Urgent Care is located at 334 12th Ave. S.E., and Immediate Care of Norman is located at 800 24th Ave. N.W.
