Let’s face it, waking up to get to class can be tough. And the location of your morning class may influence just how many extra minutes of valuable sleep you can squeeze in before starting your day. To ensure you get as much shut-eye as possible, we’ve targeted some of the major buildings on campus, and we’ve come up with the fastest route to get to them, whether you’re walking or riding your bike.
It’s important to remember that these times can vary depending on several variables.
First, of course, your walking speed affects how fast you get to class, but where you live can have an impact as well. We timed all of these walks from Couch Tower because it is the farthest from the main campus area. If you live in Walker or Adams Tower, shave a minute and a half from those times above, and if you live in Cate Center, you can go ahead and knock off almost three minutes from all of those times.
Next, to all of you that plan to bike: it can be a major timesaver, but foot traffic in certain parts of campus could slow you down.
Finally, it’s best when you first start your classes to give yourself plenty of time to get to them, just in case you get turned around.
1) Dale Hall
Being one of the closest buildings to the residence halls also makes it one of the shortest walks. Walking at a moderate speed will get you there in five to six minutes, or if you’re on a bike, it will take around three and a half minutes.
2) Adams Hall
The fastest way to get there is to take the east sidewalk on the South Oval (the side of the oval with the road running through it). Walking this route will take you right around 10 minutes.
However, if you’re riding your bike, it’s best to stay on the wider sidewalk on the South Oval, then pass in front of Bizzell and head east. You’ll get there in five minutes.
3) Physical Science Center
Taking the wide sidewalk on the South Oval to the west side of Bizzell Memorial Library (the side with the clock tower) will get you there in roughly 13 minutes on foot; riding your bike will get you there in six.
4) Catlett Music Hall
Music majors beware: it’s a hike. Taking the wide sidewalk on the South Oval, past the clock tower and across Elm Avenue is a 15-minute walk. Biking the same route takes six minutes.
5) Sarkeys Energy Center
This is by far the longest walk for students at the residence halls. There are also several routes to get there, all taking almost the same amount of time. Your best bet is to take the east sidewalk on the South Oval (the same one you use to get to Adams Hall), then walk east in front of the football stadium toward Jenkins Avenue. Then continue heading north toward the tallest building in front of you (Sarkeys is the tallest building in the city of Norman, so it’s hard to miss). After all is said and done, that trek will take you roughly 20 minutes.
Taking the same route on your bicycle will take you around eight minutes.
