Lawmakers vote abortion bills into law
by   |  April 28, 2010  |

The Oklahoma Senate overrode Gov. Brad Henry’s veto of two abortion bills Tuesday, one of which requires a woman to view an ultrasound before having an abortion.

The other bill makes it illegal to sue a doctor claiming wrongful birth because the doctor failed to convince the mother to abort a child.

Henry vetoed the two bills last week on the grounds that they do not protect victims of rape and incest.

On Monday, the House of Representatives voted 84-12 against the governor’s veto, and the Senate voted 36-12 on Tuesdsay, making the bills law.

Henry said he is disappointed with the override because it signals the beginning of another costly legal battle for the state.

“Both laws will be challenged and, in all likelihood, overturned by the courts as unconstitutional,” Henry said by e-mail. “I fear this entire exercise will ultimately be a waste of taxpayers’ time and money.”

Henry’s words came true Tuesday afternoon when a reproductive rights group from New York filed a lawsuit in Oklahoma County court.

House Speaker Chris Benge said he was proud the House acted quickly in overriding the veto.

“This is clearly not a partisan issue,” said Benge, R-Tulsa. “We must move to stop the degradation of human life seen in recent years and stand up for those who cannot defend themselves.”

Senate Pro-Tempore Glenn Coffee, R-Oklahoma City, said the only way the bill will be defeated is in court, but Coffee said he is confident the laws will remain on the books.

“I would remind the governor and those who would seek to overturn this action that the governor has already signed two pro-life bills into law this session that had been previously overturned by the courts on a technicality, not substance,” Coffee said. “That same technicality applies to the two vetoes that were overturned today. The argument that these bills will be challenged in the courts is speculative.”

Henry vetoes gun bill

On Tuesday, Gov. Brad Henry vetoed a gun bill exempting buyers of Oklahoma-made guns from federal criminal background checks and other regulatory safeguards.

Henry said the bill would make it easier for criminals to obtain a wide array of weapons in Oklahoma and endanger citizens and law enforcement officers in the process.

“Any state effort to selectively ignore federal laws will certainly draw a legal challenge and result in a costly court battle that the state cannot win,” Henry said. “It simply makes no sense to continue to pass unconstitutional measures that run up legal bills and waste taxpayers’ money.”

But the bill’s author, Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, said just like the two abortion bill vetoes that also were overturned, he believed he had enough votes to overturn this veto. He said he would attempt to override the governor’s veto of SB 1685 as soon as possible.

“The governor claims to be pro-life then vetoes pro-life bills. He claims to support the Second Amendment then vetoes legislation supporting it,” Brogdon said. “Actions speak louder than words — what he says he believes and what he does don’t add up. This bill would have given Oklahomans greater protection for their right to keep and bear arms.”

Brogdon said the reason he wrote the bill was to preserve a citizen’s right to purchase a firearm, which he said was slowly being legislated away.

My gay agenda was made by Lisa Frank and let me tell you, it's FABULOUS.

Yes Mustafa, what is the homosexual agenda? And want exactly do you mean that pregnancies resulting from rape and incest are almost as rare as pregnancies that threaten the actual life of the mother? One pregnancy out of incest or rape is one too many!! So what is your solution to pregnancies out of rape or incest? What kind of person are you? 1 in every 4 girls is sexually abused, did you know that? And who are you or the other ignorants to decide if I want to have an abortion or not. That is MY decision, not you crazy "religious" psychos. How can you all claim to be Christians, it is just unconceivable to me. Besides, I thought this country had a separation of church and state. You should be thinking on how to help your fellow humans in need, like the homeless, or orphans, or survivors from incest or child abuse and neglect, or victims of violence, or adolescents at risk, etc. Did you know Oklahoma has the highest incarceration of women and is one of the top 5 states in child abuse and neglect? You should probably be helping the LIVING children in need and not the unborn, or probably making the world a better place for the children that would have the unfortunate chance to come into this hateful world.
Mind your own business and stop trying to control everyone's life: if women can have abortions or not, if homosexuals should have the right to get married, etc. Seriously, it is too much, what planet do you come from???!!!

Pro-life people are so nice to willing grant exception for pregnancies resulting from rape, incest, or a threat to the life of the mother. That is so Christian!

To limit the report of rape to seven days is unreal. What if a woman doesn't have the courage to go to the police before seven days? After that she can just pretend it never happen, right? And when a victim is not "on the pill" at the time of the rape it is very foolish behavior, especially since the rapist was not considerate enough to use a condom!!

You must be a really evil person to make fun of many victims of rape. Seriously, don't you think you probably went a little too far by making fun of the desperation of many women when they are pleading for their lives? You should pray and ask forgiveness for your comments.

Finally, I would really like to see exactly where you get the information about homosexuals and pedophiles. I believe pedophiles should receive life in prison. I believe in protecting children above everything else. But were you come from when you say it is a fact that homosexuals are pedophiles. That’s ignorant. I work with abuse children and study consequences of abuse and prevention of abuse. I know what I am talking about. I am not just talking out of prejudice and passing judgment to others because I don’t agree with their sexual tendencies.

And yes, I am a liberal, and a very proud liberal. I am a humanitarian. I believe every human being has the same rights regardless of religion, sex, race, ethnicity, gender, citizenship, etc, etc, etc. But I do not hate people that do not agree with my views. I just cannot understand why there are people out there that try to control and impose their beliefs and morals on everyone else. I thought this was a free country that offered the same rights and justice for everyone. And I thought this was a country that was proud to have separation of church and state. But, in reality, it is just not true!

Governor Henry is absolutely right. Yet the people of Oklahoma will continue voting for these people to continue wasting our money over pointless legal battles on unconstitutional legislation. They call themselves conservative Christians but these are the most evil, vile snakes around. Democracy in action when you have an ignorant and superstitious voting population. Well, I for one will not be donating my tax money to a state that hates women - these pigs can drown in their own self-generated economic stagnation when the reasonable people leave.

Funny how the Daily only covers things after the fact. Oh and good luck getting a doctor to tell you anything, now a doctor doesn't even have to tell you your pregnant. Since knowing your pregnant is the first step to an abortion, your OBGYN will just keep it a secret. Welcome to Afghanistan! Hey Billy and Sykes how about a bill to stone women who get raped, that seems like a good next step!

The reason for having women to view an ultrasound, and have the gravity of the procedure make clear to them, is to ensure that they have not been conned into having the abortion by advocates like Planned Parenthood.

This accusation comes from millions of women who realized, after the fact, that they had been cruely manipulated by the abortion industry.

Mustafa, what do you mean by saying that pro-abortion people say that a women may need long enough time to "know if she is pregnant so she can then make a false claim of rape to escape responsibility for her own foolish behavior"? What is the foolish behavior you are talking about? Why do have so much hatred? So now it is the victim's fault. A person could be walking naked and NO ONE, ABSOLUTLY NO ONE has the right to even lay a finger on top of that naked person!! Rape is one of the most horrific things, it is like killing a person. And now you claim that it is the victims fault. This is just unreal. And putting pedophilia and polygamy in "homosexual agenda" it is just so discriminatory. Where do you get this information? And homosexual marriage, adoption, and end of don't ask don’t tell are just examples of human's rights.

I am curious, Mustafa. How many of the MILLIONS of women "who realized, after the fact, that they had been cruelly manipulated by the abortion industry" have you personally spoken to?

The only cruel manipulation I've seen has come from fake pregnancy crisis centers where they tell women things like their chances of getting breast cancer will increase by 100% if they have an abortion and from lawmakers who profess to be "standing up for those who cannot defend themselves" at the expense of women who can no longer make decisions about their own bodies (not even taking into account the victims of rape and incest).

I can't wait to leave Oklahoma.

Rape and incest are documented by reporting it to the police in a timely manner. Compromises offered abortions in cases of rape if the rape was reported within SEVEN DAYS of the crime. Pro-abortion people rejected that saying that seven days was too short a period for a typical female to gather her wits and courage to report this serious crime. (Once again when the situation calls for it we are expected believe that women are psychology too frail to compete.) They claim a woman may need months to come forward to report the crime, certainly at least long enough to know if she is pregnant so she can then make a false claim of rape to escape responsibility for her own foolish behavior. That of course is what feminism is about.

And don't give me that jive about what-agenda.

Here is a partial list:

Homosexual marriage, adoption, end of don't ask don't tell, end of dress codes, polygamy pedophilia

Saffron- I’ve been following this debate for decades. It has been waged in every form of media. I heard countless testimony from women about how they felt betrayed by the abortion providers. I have a large video collection of examples. What I said previously is not a secrete.

Feminists know that most women who come to them are reluctant to go through with it. The abortionists feel they are doing women a favor by creating the illusion that nothing about abortion involves morality. It takes time and effort to get a young scared woman to believe that it isn’t life, that there is nothing wrong and there won’t be any feelings of guilt. Once the girl gets persuaded she needs to quickly have the abortion because the induced state is very fragile. This why the free speech of pro-lifers had to be unfairly curtailed. When you’ve gone to a lot of trouble to get the girl to believe “It is not a baby,” you don’t want her coming within earshot of someone saying, “It is a baby. Please don’t kill your baby!”

Feminists denied for years that Post Abortion Syndrome even existed. In order to dramatize how inconsequential having an abortion could be, it was advocated that all women should have at least one abortion, for no other reason than to make the political statement that they alone controlled their bodies. Otherwise they might never be truly sure they actually wanted their children but were, perhaps subconsciously, pushed into it by societal expectations.

I personally knew one girl who after being promise marriage was jilted at the altar and, in her anger, she had her baby killed. Her personality subsequently change to a very hard harted person. It took her years to finally come to terms with what she did and only after she married and had another child.

"This accusation comes from millions of women who realized, after the fact, that they had been cruely manipulated by the abortion industry." (...) "I heard countless testimony from women about how they felt betrayed by the abortion providers" (...) "I personally knew one girl who after being promise marriage was jilted at the altar..."

So touching, especially when it comes from someone who always go medieval on women. I remember you saying that the role of women was to get pregnant and raise children at home, and that they should not attempt to go to college, or choose the career and lifestyle they want. Not so long after you were spitting on military women and claiming that rape victims were just looking for it. Actually, every breathing non-jesusfreak females were one way or another characterized by you as feminist baby-killing whores. Did I forgot the death threats you sent to female commentators of the Daily?

So now you claim you are an abortion specialist and, according to you, abortion is a huge industry owned by feminist murderers who spend their time convincing billions of christians to kill their babies in the name of satan. Of course, it is absolutely not related to potentially fatal medical conditions, rape/incest issues or the right to control your body over a microscopic three weeks embryo with no heart or brain.

dio- I have said some mean things but I never said the things you've attribute to me. You gay-bait anyone who doesn’t support the homosexual agenda.

Pregnancies resulting from rape and incest are almost as rare as pregnancies that threaten the actual life of the mother.

Nevertheless, even before abortion was legalized a woman could still get a legal abortion if her life was genuinely endangered by the pregnancy.

Pro-life legislation has repeatedly been willing to compromise on situations of documented rape and incest. Pro-abortion forces reject it every time because of the "documented" stipulation.

Try asking around or something.

What exactly is the homosexual 'agenda'? Do enlighten us, Mustafa. Enter your houses forcibly and change your curtains? Paint your walls pink? Or gay you up maybe? And how do you document rape and incest? Ask your rapist to give you a signed acknowledgment?

" I just cannot understand why there are people out there that try to control and impose their beliefs and morals on everyone else."

This is such profound hypocrisy. You claim to be a proud liberal. Are you telling me the Left doesn't try to impose beliefs and morals on everyone else? They are constantly claiming total domination of the moral high ground and then force feeding their own morality and beliefs down the throats of everyone else. In nearly every debate - climate change, health care reform, immigration - liberals begin by making an emotionally charged indictment of all who disagree as immoral and then proceed to tell you how you must accept their morals or be slandered.

The fact is that forcing your morality and beliefs on others is the very cornerstone of a social compact. Without it, there is no society. There is just chaos.

"And I thought this was a country that was proud to have separation of church and state."

Separation of church and state means that every citizen is free to practice the religion of their own choice, or no religion at all, and that the state has no legal authority to establish an official church. As an American, I am very proud of this great achievement. It was revolutionary for its time, and it has served us well. However, it has never meant - nor was it ever intended to mean - that religious faith should not inform decisions in the public sphere. For better or worse, religious belief is a very significant part of the human experience. To suggest that it should have no influence on how people choose to govern themselves is a poorly conceived notion. The extent and nature of this influence is certainly open for debate, but to say that it should not exist, in my view, is erroneous.

“what do you mean by saying that pro-abortion people say that a women may need long enough time"

OK remember, this debate has been going on for decades not just the last half dozen years since you became politically aware.

That, pro-life legislation willing to grant exception for pregnancies resulting from rape, incest, or a threat to the LIFE of the mother has been offered in the past, IS A FACT.

The opposition (liberals) went on every talk show, news program and print media to say SEVEN DAYS wasn't not long enough for a typical woman to get it together. Have you not heard this before? Are you that wet behind the ears?

“What is the foolish behavior you are talking about?”

Are you not on the pill or some other method? Would it not be foolish to regularly engage in intercourse without such protection. Then of course let's not forget how wonderfully effective condoms are (sarcasm).

I think even before Roe vs. Wade it was possible to get an abortion for rape and incest but since those were very rare (as they are now)it really didn't count.

"Rape is one of the most horrific things, it is like killing a person."

No it isn't. There is plenty of testimony from rape victims, or the men who raped and killed them, that they offered to give him "anything you want, just don't KILL ME."

Multiple marriage and especially pedophilia have been a staple of the homosexual rights movement since the beginning. The movement regards itself as a sexuality movement. Pedophiles march in gay rights parades, advertize in gay magazines and meet at the same conventions. Their intellectual-political argument is the same as the homosexual movement's. Have you never heard of NAMBLA. Go to their website. Pedophile advocacy was all over the 1993 March on Washington. Where were you? Spitting up Gerber products?

If you are pro-gay, whether you realize it or not, you are also pro-pedophile. Their "rights" cannot can only proceed in the wake of homosexual "rights."

"Why do have so much hatred?"

Again with this idiocy. You’re a typical liberal who thinks no matter how much you persecute and offend people, they will only regard you with admiration and affection. What incredible conceit.

If you learn anything at school learn this. You are not loved for your politics. You are just as hated by those you hate.

“To limit the report of rape to seven days is unreal.” Thanks for confirming my statement.

“What if a woman doesn't have the courage to go to the police before seven days?”

It doesn’t make sense. If she is truly angry about any violation or crime against her, why so frightened. Any lag in reporting suggests lack of credibility. What is next, are you going to tell me “women don’t lie about rape?”

“Seriously, don't you think you probably went a little too far by making fun of the desperation of many women when they are pleading for their lives?”

I think that people who say that rape is like murder go way too far. It isn’t anything like it. My statement was relevant, a blunt truth but a truth no less. If you had received more bluntness about the realities of life, instead of sugar coated liberal pap, maybe you wouldn’t be a liberal.

“Finally, I would really like to see exactly where you get the information about homosexuals and pedophiles.”

Well where were you in 1993? NAMBLA and man-boy love were a visible part of the Homosexual-rights coalition throughout the eighties. The movement only reluctantly disassociated itself from them when it became too much of a politically negative.

Example: During the Clinton era the IGBLF was appointed to the UN council on human rights. The hated Jessie Helms protested the appointment on the floor of the Senate. He pointed out that the IGBLF contained Nambla. Pressure was brought to bare, and the IGBLF gave Nambla the boot. A few months later the IGBLF was given the boot when it was discovered they hadn’t expelled a Dutch pedophile group.

Also during the nineties, the Univ. Of Mass. at Amherst included pedophile in it's list of protected groups.

“But where do you come from when you say it is a fact that homosexuals are pedophiles.”

I didn’t say that. I said basically that if you are pro-gay then you might as well be pro-pedophile. The claims are identical. In fact when it comes to “not having any choice,” or “ being unable to change,” the pedophiles have a stronger claim. The both causes travel the same path but Homosexual-rights is the trailblazer, bringing along all other “sexualities.”
