Another Norman Music Festival has come and gone, but that does not mean we will forget the graduating class of 2010. Stay awesome guys, don’t ever change.
Class Clown — Shitty/Awesome
Lead singer Will Muir howled like a manic. The keyboardist donned a chicken head for a song. The guys of Guestroom Records and friends rolled and tumbled all over the place and had the crowd in stitches. The music was no joke though.
Most NMF Spirit — Mayola
Oklahomans were delighted to see Mayola get the chance to shine on the main stage. Festival attendees were treated to one of the most energetic, boisterous performances of both days despite the early set time.
Most Gifted — Dirty Projectors
Obviously, the Dirty Projectors had to be somewhat talented to warrant the headlining spot, but the band showed just what made them so popular: spot-on, intricate guitar melodies and tight knit vocal melodies that are simply otherworldly.
Best Hair — The Sword
It’s like Cousin It started a metal band, definitely appropriate head-banging length.
Most mischievous — The Boom Bang
Taunting God by playing before an impending thunderstorm is wily enough. Add a handful of smoke bombs and crowd wandering and you’ve got a rightout daredevil.
Most Likely to Succeed — The Non
Not too many venues had to turn away fans, and I’m pretty sure none of them had to turn away more than 200 of them. The Non played to a jam-packed Sooner Theatre, with none other than Wayne Coyne watching stageside. Talk about a rite of passage.
Most Stylish — Jacob Abello
Sure, the girls of Those Darlins were cute in their garage-country chic, and Electric Six rocked its tuxedos. But no one looked better than Abello. He came out in a black suit with big gold boots, made a quick wardrobe change mid-set into sequined leggings and eventually stripped away his shirt for a routine with choreographed dancers. “Nothing But Gold” indeed.

Best Thing Ever - Edan?

I didn't like the Projectors. Call me crazy but I thought I was listening to a bedtime story.
And I didn't like Edan either. He was alright. I'm a Jabee guy.

Two other performers worth noting: Saturday's performance by John Calvin at the Universe City stage (Bill & Dee's). That was also a sardine-packed crowd that stretched out the door. Unfortunately under-21s were turned away. That was a damn shame. He was unbelievable as usual.
Also at the UC stage on Sunday, Giggle Party took the stage to close out that venue's festivities on Sunday. Silly String, balloons and cupcakes, and performers running around in another packed, manic crowd, were the order of the night. They did make a huge mess ... and it was totally worth it. "Energetic" doesn't begin to describe this band.

I was deeply disappointed to be among the 200-ish fans who were turned away from Sooner Theater when The Non hit the stage. That group deserves MAIN STAGE for NMF 4 next year. They are that good, and WILL be going places.
The Boom Bang also deserves Main Stage. Because the small setup behind Guestroom (or anything like it) can no longer contain those maniacs.
Actually, I saw both bands play on the same bill at The Opolis in February. Hell of a show.

Is the Daily dead set on ignoring Electric Six?! The drummer's "from" Oklahoma, for Pete's sake. I'd take "Gay Bar" over "otherworldly" vocals any day.
