Sooners take 11th in Big 12 Tournament
by   |  April 26, 2010  |

The OU women’s golf team finished 11th at the Big 12 Championship over the weekend at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club.

Texas A&M, which after round one was tied for seventh, and after the second round tied for third, won the Big 12 title by shooting a team total 896 (+32) for the tournament.

Oklahoma State led the tournament after the first two rounds but faltered Sunday, shooting a 308 (+20), and finished in second place, just one stroke behind Texas A&M (897, +33).

Texas rounded out the top three shooting a 306 (+18) in Sunday’s final round and finishing with a team total of 905 (+41).

The Sooners played consistent golf on Sunday but couldn’t string anything consistent throughout the weekend to make a charge at the leaders.

OU was in ninth place after Friday’s first round shooting an 18-over, 306. On Saturday, the Sooners dropped a little to eleventh place shooting a team total 315, (+27).

“All in all, it seems like this week we had too many big numbers on the course,” junior Ellen Mueller said. “[We had] double bogeys and stuff and really there is no reason to ever have those.”

Mueller said the course contributed, at least in part, to the team’s struggles.

“The greens really firmed up so it made it a little more difficult to get close,” she said. “If you were on with your putting, you could make lots of birdies. But if you were struggling a little bit, it was a very long round.”

All OU golfers on Sunday’s final round shot under-80 rounds. Mueller once again led the Sooners.

“Ellen is a solid player to have on the team, she's very consistent,” head coach Veronique Drouin said.

Mueller shot a final round 77 (+5) to finish in 20th place with a final score of 229 (+13). This marked the 11th top-20 performance for her this season and the 11th time in 12 tournaments that Mueller has led the Sooners.

Senior Andrea Sellmeyer also shot a final-round 77 to finish with a weekend total of 232 (+16) for a 30th place finish. Fellow senior Chelsey Collins shot consistent rounds through the weekend with rounds of 77-78-78 for a 54-hole total of 233 (+17) to finish tied for 35th place.

In her Big 12 tournament debut, freshman Taylor Schmidt shot a 4-over 76 on Sunday to finish tied for 39th place overall (235, +19). Sophomore Brooke Collins shot her lowest round of the tournament on Sunday with a 7-over 79. Collins finished with a total of 245 (+29) to round things out for the Sooners, finishing in 58th place.

The team carded a total 308 (+20) for the final round and a tournament total of 929 (+65).

The women’s golf team season seems to be over, they were ranked 72nd overall and needed to win the Big 12 Tournament to have a chance for an automatic bid for the NCAA Regional Tournament. However, junior Ellen Mueller has an opportunity to compete in an individual bid.

“It's been a long season for us; we played in a lot of tournaments this spring. We're still working out and expect the girls to keep working on their game,” Drouin said.
