The No. 17 baseball team dropped game one of a three-game set against the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station 6-2.
The Sooners (27-11, 6-8 Big 12) took a different approach with their starting pitching by going with senior pitcher J.R. Robinson (1-3, 5.08 ERA) rather than junior pitcher Zach Neal to start the series, but the change did not equal a victory. Robinson threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits.
The left hander gave up one run in the first inning, second inning and fourth inning before the Sooners got on the scoreboard.
OU scored two runs in the fifth inning. The first run came on a wild pitch scoring junior right fielder Rick Eisenberg after he reached base on a triple, and junior second baseman drove in the second run with a single to left-center field.
But a 3-2 deficit would be the closest the Sooners would get to contesting the Aggies lead.
Robinson got the first two batters of the seventh inning out before he walked a batter and allowed a two-out single to end his night. Senior pitcher Jeremy Erben relieved Robinson to get the final out of the seventh, but he gave up a three-run home run to the first and only batter he faced Friday.
The homer put the Aggies up 6-2, and their bullpen pitched the final two innings to secure the series opening victory.
The Sooners will try to even the series at a game apiece at 2:05 p.m. Saturday, and junior pitcher Zach Neal will start on the mound. Neal has a 5-1 record and a 4.08 ERA.
