Nationwide game to invade OU campus, students invited to join
by   |  April 22, 2010  |

OU will unofficially host the game Humans vs. Zombies beginning Friday.

Those playing the game must sign up online and also report who they have “killed” online as well.

“Basically, this is a huge, weeklong game of tag. It’s sort of like gotcha or assassins, but more complicated than that,” the event’s Facebook page states.

There will be one original zombie who will tag humans. Once tagged, humans become zombies after an hour, and then they need to tag humans, the page states. If a zombie doesn’t tag a human for 48 hours, it dies.

“We’ll see if the humans can win,” the page states. “The humans will wear a bandana around an arm or a leg. The zombies (except not the original one) will wear a bandana around his/her neck or head.”

The event is not intended to disrupt class and other campus events, Doug Serven, one of the event’s organizers, said in a Facebook message.

“One of the big things is not disturbing the academic environment at OU,” Serven said. “So that’s why we’re not going to be running through OU buildings with a hoard of zombies after humans. So keep it outside. There are a few events that will be off limits.”

Serven said some rules have been changed since the game was first announced.

“We are only doing socks. No Nerf guns,” Serven said. “Next time we can talk to the administration about nerf guns, but we didn’t want to risk it this time.“

Just because everyone begins as a human doesn’t mean that they have to wait until they are tagged and become a zombies, Serven said.

“The humans will often have missions, so be ready and check your e-mails often so you can be on the alert,” Serven said. “The zombies may sometimes have some missions.”

Serven said participants should not to take the game too seriously.

“The big thing is to have fun,” Serven said. “Don’t be a punk and get too caught up in the technicalities. If we all end up as zombies, then the zombies win. There will be a moderator. He or she will give you the benefit of the doubt once, but if there are more problems, then you’ll have to abide by the moderator’s decisions or be out of the game.”

Serven said the event will be one week in duration from Friday to April 30.

The event will end with a human or zombie 1980s-themed dance party, depending on which group wins, Serven said.
