The No. 9 baseball team tried salvaging this weekend’s series against No. 7 Texas after dropping the first two games of the set, but the Longhorns had other plans. Texas completed the three-game sweep with a 9-3 victory over OU at L. Dale Mitchell Park Saturday behind solid pitching and timely hitting.
The sweep was the second in as many years for the Longhorns (21-7, 7-2) over OU (22-6, 3-4), and they outscored the Sooners 16-3. Texas pitchers held OU to a .125 batting average during the series.
Texas junior pitcher Brandon Workman (5-1, 3.09) continued the Longhorns’ dominance on the mound by virtually silencing the Sooners’ bats through eight innings of work. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out eight batters.
The Sooners’ runs were the first that the Texas pitching staff allowed during the series. The Longhorns held OU off the scoreboard for the first 21 2/3 innings of the series until freshman designated hitter Max White launched a two-run home run over the 411 sign in left-center field.
But the home run came when the Sooners were already in a six-run hole.
Senior pitcher J.R. Robinson (1-2, 5.76) got knocked around early and was pulled after giving up four runs in two-plus innings, and everyone else head coach Sunny Golloway brought into the game had trouble holding Texas’ bats at bay.
The Sooners used five relief pitchers, and four of them gave up at least one run against a Longhorns lineup that went deep three times Saturday. Junior right fielder Kevin Keyes hit two home runs and junior first baseman Tant Shepherd had one of his own.
Keyes ended the game with three hits in five plate appearances and drove in two runs on the two solo home runs.
Even though junior catcher Cameron Rupp did not go deep Friday, he was very productive at the plate. He went 4-5 with a double and three RBIs.
OU added a run in the eighth inning while down 9-2 on an RBI double by junior right fielder Rick Eisenberg.
Golloway was ejected in the bottom of the ninth inning arguing a call in the field and declined to do interviews after the game.
The Sooners head down to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on the TCU Horned Frogs at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. OU has not yet named a starting pitcher for the game.
