Below is The Oklahoma Daily's Hailey Branson's Q&A with Goddard alcohol counselor, Jennifer Crenshaw.
Q: How long has OU had an alcohol counselor?
A: Counseling and Testing Services has had a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) for several years proving assessment and counseling services for students.
Q: Do you think students are aware that these counseling services are available? Do they utilize them?
A: The University makes every effort to inform students of the many services and opportunities available to them. All incoming first-year students are required to complete an on-line and an in person face-to-face alcohol education program. Students receive information on campus and community resources available to them, and how, when, and where they may be accessed. Counseling & Testing Services is one of many resources that are presented to students as a resource and it is used and widely accepted by our students.
Q: What are some warning signs of alcohol addiction?
A: There are many warning signs, however some of the most common include: lack of control over drinking, persistent desire or unsuccessful effort to cut down on drinking, symptoms of withdrawal when alcohol is removed (shakiness, nausea, anxiety, craving, sweating, sleep problems), and reduced or canceled important social, occupational, or recreational activities
Q: At what point should a friend tell a friend to seek help/counseling?
A: Referrals should be made anytime you believe a friend is not functioning well as a result of their drinking or drug use.
