If there was any doubt in Sooners fans' minds that backup quarterback Landry Jones could not handle the load while Sam Bradford is out with injury, they should look again.
Jones has looked impressive in his first start, despite the rainy conditions, connecting with wide receiver Ryan Broyles early and often in the first half against Idaho State. The Sooners lead the Bengals 41-0 at halftime. Jones has gone 11/17 for 220 yards and three touchdowns.
The first play from scrimmage for the Sooners started out with a big gain for 35 yards on a screen pass to Broyles. However after driving down to the Bengals one yard line the Sooners were not able to convert on four tries and turn the ball over on downs. The next series was a different story as Jones rolled out to the left and connected with Broyles for a 24 yard touchdown pass.
Broyles has been an offensive machine for the Sooners in the first half; he has caught seven passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns. His third came in the second quarter with an amazing 11 yard catch in the back of the end zone. He is on pace to break former wide out Juaquin Iglesias singles game record for receptions, if he plays in the second half.
The Sooners defense looks much better this week as well. The Sooners have only let up one first down in the first half and have held the Bengals to negative two yards. The Sooners have forced two fumbles in the first half, one which was recovered and returned three yards for a touchdown by defensive end Frank Alexander.
The Sooners have also had help from the ground game with touchdowns from both running backs Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray. The two backs have run for a combined 105 yards on 16 carries. The Sooners look to continue their dominance in the second half.
