ARLINGTON, Texas — The fate of the No. 3 Sooners’ season may have been determined by a first-and-10 yard incomplete pass and a 14-13 loss to the No. 20 BYU Cougars. The sight of 2008 Heisman Trophy winner junior quarterback Sam Bradford keeled over in pain after his shoulder was driven into the ground by BYU senior linebacker Coleby Clawson predestined the heart-wrenching defeat the OU players, coaches and fans would endure while at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The defending Heisman Trophy winner suffered an AC joint sprain in his throwing shoulder in OU’s 14-13 loss to the No. 20 Cougars, and it is undetermined how long he will be out of the Sooners’ lineup.

Before leaving the game, Bradford completed 10-of-14 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. He came out at the end of the first half with a 10-7 lead before backup freshman quarterback Landry Jones took over.

Without Bradford, the Sooners had to rely on Jones, an inexperienced offensive line and the leg of redshirt freshman Tress Way, none of which equated to much against a healthy and abrasive BYU defense.

The game still went on without Bradford, though, but during his time in the game, both teams played sloppy football.

While the offense was struggling to put points on the board in the third quarter, the defense stepped up and held the Cougars scoreless and rattled BYU senior quarterback Max Hall. During the frame, the defense sacked Hall three times and forced an interception.

The interception came on a crucial third-and-six play deep in the Cougars’ territory by senior middle linebacker Keenan Clayton that led to sophomore place kicker Jimmy Stevens’ second field goal of the evening.

The Sooners benefited from a pass interference penalty in the endzone to keep the drive alive, but a fourth down delay of game penalty prevented OU from going for a touchdown.

Hall and the Cougars’ offense came to life midway through the fourth quarter while OU still had trouble advancing the ball. BYU drove the ball inside the 10 yard line and took a 14-13 lead with 3:03 left in the game.

BYU junior kicker Mitch Payne gave the Sooners life on the kickoff following the touchdown by kicking the ball out of bounds, giving OU possession at the 40 yard line with just over three minutes remaining. But, the Sooners could not capitalize on another BYU mistake as Way’s field goal missed short and to the left before the Cougars ran out the game’s remaining seconds.

Jones finished the game throwing for 51 yards and completing 50 percent of his passes while the rushing attack could muster up a 147 yards on 16 carries.

The Sooners return to play at 6 p.m. Saturday in Norman to take on the Idaho State Bengals.
