CAMPUS BRIEF: Norman 350

The world’s largest global initiative to raise climate change awareness will reach Norman 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Native Roots Market, 132 W Main St.

Norman350 is one of 4,814 events taking place in 179 countries, organized by 350.org, an international environmental organization committed to spreading awareness of climate change.

Norman’s event will feature a speech by Norman Mayor Cindy Rosenthal about what Norman is doing to combat climate change, a bike decorating contest and a group bike ride. Fair trade prizes will be awarded to the winners of best-decorated bikes.

350.org is headed by author and environmental activist Bill McKibben. The organization is named after the research of NASA scientist James Hansen, who stated in a 2007 paper that 350 parts-per-million of CO2 in the atmosphere is a safe upper limit to avoid a climate tipping point.
