The last game football game against Baylor saw the return of Heisman trophy winner Sam Bradford who threw for 389 yards in his first game back since his injury in the first game of the season.
He was able to lead the Sooners down the field into the red zone where they were a perfect seven for seven on the game. The only problem, only three of those seven trips resulted in touchdowns.
The Sooners for the past couple of weeks have had a very difficult time getting the ball into the end zone once they enter the red zone. They have an even more difficult time when they are inside the ten yard line. If the Sooners want to have any chance of beating Texas next week they will have to find a way to get the ball in the end zone for six points instead of settling for three.
“It gets down to execution in the run game,” said head coach Bob Stoops. “We also had some drops in the pass game too, but we will fix it.”
In a positive light, the Sooners can trust kicker Jimmy Stevens to convert field goals inside the red zone, however they cannot rely on him. OU constantly tries to prove they can run the ball and over power the defense but just have not been able to. Looking back at the game against Baylor multiple times the Sooners would run the ball three straight times with DeMarco Murray or Chris Brown only to be brought down at the line of scrimmage. Even though there is no chance of seeing him play this year, this is where tight end Jermaine Gresham is so valued for this Sooners team.
“The most frustrating thing is the way we played in the red zone today,” Bradford said after the game against Baylor, “Obviously we can’t rely on field goals if we want to win”
Next week the Sooners head down to Dallas to take on Texas in the Red River Rivalry. As of right now the Sooners have been criticized for not have a big time playmaker who can take it to the house on any given down. Now the Sooners seem to be struggling in the red zone. For a team that was so prolific in offense last season they will have to find a way to convert touchdowns when they work the ball all the way down the field. Nothing takes the momentum out of a team more than having a solid drive all the way down the field only to settle for three points.
“In practice we will get a lot of time in score zone situations,” said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, “We were fortunate tonight to have that many field goals and still get a win, and with the upcoming games we are going to have to eliminate that.”
